Griftlands metacritic9/4/2023 ![]() The game thrives on theming and characters, so it lets you pick starting perks and the types of cards you want to play with to better augment the game feel. You can tell the game to disable that unlock set from appearing during a live game. You like most of them but hate playing with poison cards. Griftlands has a neat feature though, where you get to pick what cards show up in game. ![]() I've actually found in my personal experience that Griftlands had less card flexibility than Spire. No strategy is perfectly replicatable, as even if you're offered the same card in two runs, sometimes your second deck will already be pushing a different synergy and won't want that card you used before. You will not always see the same cards in the same order, as often, at the correct time, or for the right price, or lack an important synergy to make it pop off, so the game vastly changes. This is a blanket statement that really just applies to every card game. Got the impression that there are mostly the same cards in every run If you want a game that focuses almost entirely on the cards, then Spire is your game.Griftlands has actual story, so if you want your game to have story and characters you actually care about, that interact and impact each other, this is the game for you.I would choose the game based on one thing: ![]() It has lots of difficulty scaling and in different ways than Spire. Griftlands has a lot more replayability than it did back in early access before it got the rest of its story content and now. Griftlands just came out of beta, so there also isn’t any real harm in waiting for it to settle a little bit more. Of course, you are on a slay the spire subreddit, but I’d personally recommend Slay the Spire first. Beyond unlocking cards you can upgrade your max health, max resolve (social encounter health bar), starting money, heals after battles, card exp gain, Finale gain on certain actions, better starting boons, new Finales, etc, which I personally don’t like as much in deckbuilders. Additionally, there is a very heavy focus on metaprogression. However, I dislike that you can’t see which boss or encounters are coming up, so you can’t plan ahead as well. Griftlands also has a much more visually exciting style than Slay the Spire. The card exp is a cool mechanic as well, where after you play the base version of a card a few times you can then upgrade it to a better version. Each run has a randomly crafted story going on, with different people that love, like, dislike, and hate you depending on your choices. Its kind of like Slay the Spire but you now have two decks to balance building up, which is cool. Metaprogression (progress that carries between runs) is strictly limited to unlocked new cards for the first few runs on each character. The map system is great, the various decks work well, the ascension system is challenging. Slay the Spire is just a really solid game. I think they are both good games, but personally I would recommend getting Slay the Spire first, especially if you are new to the deckbuilder genre.
